This is a research graphic organizer essay outline for any research topic with a grading rubric. The intention of this research project template was to give teachers an easy-to-use, tried, and true research essay outline that they could use over and over with any subject or grade level. 🙂 This research project template is designed for high school students needing to practice expository research skills. The step-by-step structure of this essay provides 7th or 8th-grade classroom success with this research project template as well. This research essay teaches students how to craft and format a meaningful research essay and will take 3-4 class periods to complete.

 

What is included:

Research Essay Graphic Organizer Outline:

The research outline/ graphic organizer is thoughtfully structured to guide students through each step of the research essay writing process. Within the Google Doc. are sentence starters and transitional phrases to help students seamlessly write a 5 paragraph essay: an introduction, 3 body paragraphs, and a conclusion paragraph. The research essay graphic organizer outline can be completed digitally or as a printable packet.

Citing Sources in MLA or APA:

Once students have finished their research graphic organizer/ outline, they are then guided to create a Work Cited Page or References page depending on the class you teach. Within the assignment is a how-to guide for creating citations in MLA format or APA Style format. Just delete the format that does not apply to your class: MLA is for English and History classrooms and APA Style is for Science classrooms.

Final Drafting Doc. with MLA & APA Format Options:

Once students have created their citations, they are now ready to format their essays. The included Final Drafting Doc. has an MLA format version and an APA Style format version. Use the version that is appropriate for your class. This drafting doc. teaches your students how to properly format their essays so that they learn the skills they need to create a college-level expository/ research essay.

Grading Rubric:

The included grading rubric is intentionally designed to SAVE YOU TIME by streamlining the grading process. Use this research essay rubric as a final assessment for the gradebook.
