Additional information

During this fun ethos pathos logos activity, students create an advertisement using ethos, pathos, and logos to convince their audience. This project is intended for middle & high school English classrooms. This best-seller will keep your studnets engaged because they love using their creativity to create their ad. Your students will love this ethos pathos logos project because it offers them a lot of freedom and choice regarding what they want to create and how they want to showcase their learning. This project will take about 2-3 class periods to complete.

What is included:

  • Engaging instructions slideshow to teach students ethos pathos logos and present the steps, directions, and requirements for the project. (25 slides)
  • Digital or printable note-taking guide (ethos pathos logos worksheet) to review ethos, pathos, and logos and prepare them for the project.
  • Digital or printable project outline and brainstorming doc. for students to fill out to help them organize their ideas for their project. They will use this to support them as they create their ad.
  • Digital advertisement template document: this is where students complete their digital advertisement. Students who prefer completing assignments by hand can choose to do so on a blank piece of paper.
  • Grading rubric that streamlines your grading process so that grading is quick and easy!

Step 1: This ethos pathos logos activity includes a highly engaging slideshow that teaches students how to differentiate between ethos pathos and logos. While you review the slideshow, students fill out the digital or 3-page print-out ethos pathos logos worksheet/ note-taking guide to guide their learning. The slideshow reviews ethos pathos logos so that students clearly understand each appeal. Then, students complete an activity where they learn strategies for creating ethos, pathos, and logos. This step helps prepare students for creating their own advertisements. The slideshow is highly engaging and includes numerous ethos pathos logos activities to hold students’ attention while having them practice using each appeal so that they become efficient at recognizing and utilizing ethos pathos logos before they begin the project. (Day 1)

Step 2: Next, students complete a brainstorming activity & outline within their note-taking guide (3-page ethos pathos logos worksheet). This step helps students choose the topic of their advertisement and helps them brainstorm ideas for how they will convey their messages effectively. Students have two options to choose from: They can either choose to create an ad. for a product that has already been created or they can create an ad. for an abstract idea. In other words, students will be selling something they believe in (ie. Students should play a team sport). The steps during this brainstorming activity ensure students are provided the structure they need to be successful for this project. (Day 1)

Step 3: The final step is for students to create their advertisement using the digital template provided or by creating it by hand. Students use their outline/brainstorm document from step 2 to help them create their ad. Students have the most fun on this day because they are given autonomy for their creative process. (Day 2)

Step 4: Students end the activity with a gallery walk & post-activity reflection/class discussion where they discuss their peers’ advertisements by explaining the most effective techniques they saw and why they found them so effective.

This Gallery Walk & Presentation Feedback Form pairs great with this portion of the lesson, and you can use it in the future with any project that your students complete. 🙂 I find this part of the lesson highly valuable because it teaches students how to provide meaningful feedback and students love receiving feedback from their peers. (Day 2-3)

This is my students’ favorite activity we complete during our ethos pathos logos unit because they love how much creativity they get to practice during this project. They come up with really interesting ideas to sell their product and they love sharing them with their peers. Please let me know how your students enjoy this activity in your classroom! 🙂

Digital & Printable: All products were made on Google Docs. and Google Slides. The activity includes a digital and printable note-taking guide depending on your classroom needs. Students complete their advertisements digitally on the doc. provided. If you have students who want to complete the activity by hand, I would let them! 🙂 Some students create amazing drawings for their advertisements using colored pencils and markers.
